++Mass action against fossil gas: Ende Gelände announces action dates of July 29 – August 2++

Press release, 14th of May 2021

Ende Gelände will take a mass action of civil disobedience against the planned LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel from 29 July to 2 August 2021. The planned LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel is also to be supplied with fracking gas. Ende Gelände opposes the further expansion of any fossil infrastructure and calls for an immediate phase-out of coal and gas.

Ronja Weil, spokesperson of Ende Gelände: “The fracking gas terminal Brunsbüttel is a symbol for continued colonial exploitation and destruction in the Global South. Gas accelerates the global climate crisis, and fracking not only pollutes the soil but also causes water shortages in the regions of extraction. This is a continuation of centuries of colonialism.”

Ende Gelände has been blocking coal infrastructure in German mining areas with mass actions of civil disobedience since 2015. In the fall of 2020, gas infrastructure was blocked for the first time at the Lausward gas-fired power plant near Düsseldorf. In 2021, the alliance will expand its fight against fracking gas.

“Just like coal, gas is a climate killer: In addition to CO2, it releases methane, which is even more harmful,” explains Ronja Weil. “That’s why Ende Gelände calls for an immediate gas phase-out. We have to get out of all fossil fuels immediately.”

The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) has recently criticized the expansion of the gas infrastructure sharply due to its harmfulness to the climate. Methane, it said, is 87 times more harmful to the climate than C02 over a 20-year period. Regarding the planned LNG terminals, it says that there is “no energy-economic necessity for the expansion of the import infrastructure” (1).

Ende Gelände denounces the greenwashing of the gas industry. “Clean gas is a dirty lie! For their profits, fossil fuel corporations are destroying the livelihoods of people in the Global South and are fueling the climate crisis worldwide,” says Ronja Weil.

Ende Gelände puts the question of system change front and center: “The fossil fuel industry is a prime example of what is wrong with our current economic system. Capitalism is breaking the limits of the planet. We fight for fundamental systemic change,” the spokesperson elaborates.

To ensure the safety and health of all participants in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ende Gelände will develop a comprehensive hygiene protection concept.
